The Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, University Medical Center Freiburg, offers one PhD student position (m/f/d) The project will test the role of the mitochondrial pro-inflammatory signalling, focusing on the protein Smac/DIABLO. Recent work, including our own (e.g. Brokatzky D et al., EMBO J 2019) shows that mitochondria have cell activating, inflammation-driving activities that are regulated by the mitochondrial apoptosis-system but that occur in the absence of cell death. Infection activates this process, and this project will investigate the molecular mechanisms and steps involved. We will use specific apoptosis-activating stimuli and a number of pathogens to probe this question. The work is largely cell biological, using various approaches, and involves some animal experimentation. a colleague holding an MSc degree in a relevant discipline you will have your own project but will work in a team with broad technical experience and scientific expertise in cell death and a number of related fields a laboratory group (head: Prof. Dr. Georg Häcker) of about 15 people with long-standing interest in cell death, especially apoptosis signaling and infection an international team combining various backgrounds and research interests our institute is part of the university hospital (University Medical Center) Freiburg; Freiburg is an excellent, very active research environment with numerous groups working on questions of biomedical importance and in basic research
