The Retina Research Laboratory of the Center of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Cologne is bridging clinical and experimental retinology to conduct translational research on the pathogenesis and therapy of blinding retinal diseases. The long-standing research focus of the lab is on retinal cell biology and immunology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal neurodegenerative diseases. The Chair of Experimental lmmunology of the Eye is an independent division of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Cologne with a strong research focus on innate immune activation in the diseased retina. The laboratory is a leading institution for experimental immunology centered around AMD and rare monogenetic retinal dystrophies including retinitis pigmentosa. To elucidate the role of innate immune activation in the pathogenesis of common blinding retinal neurodegenerative diseases To assess specific previously identified immune mechanisms in different mouse and cell culture models of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) To validate novel anti-inflammatory drug candidates for AMD treatment in these models in vitro and in vivo Candidates should be highly motivated with a strong interest in retinal cell biology, neuroimmunology, and experimental ophthalmology Candidates should hold a master's degree in biology, biomedicine, neuroscience, or a related subject Experiences with animal models, cell culture techniques and molecular biology techniques are advantageous Please send your application including CV, brief summary of previous scientific work and laboratory techniques, and references if available.
